Foley Catheters: Uses, Types, and Care Explained


A Foley catheter is a flexible medical tube designed to drain urine from the bladder when a person is unable to do so naturally. It is one of the most commonly used urinary catheters in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care settings. Named after the physician Dr. Frederic Foley, this device plays a vital role in modern medical care by ensuring proper urinary drainage and preventing complications related to urinary retention.


A Foley catheter is typically inserted through the urethra into the bladder. Once in place, a small inflatable balloon at the tip is filled with sterile water. This balloon helps keep the catheter securely positioned inside the bladder, preventing it from slipping out unintentionally. The urine then flows through the tube into a drainage bag, which can be emptied regularly.
